CARGOS OR BUST
Cargo Pants! Last week, Mara mentioned I had bought a pair from Re/Done and we got so many good comments about them. The culty website Fashionista says - If the Spring 2019 New York Fashion Week runways are anything to go by, it won't be long before we're all wearing cargos again.
At Fashion Week, there were very dressy ones, like Prabal Gurung's in pink silk brocade and hot pink patchwork. Dior had AMAZING tie-dye cargo jeans (Do you think that’s just too much - combining two trendy things into one - tie-dye PLUS cargo?).
Truth is - I didn’t buy the Re/Done pants. Not YET. The challenge - there are just so many great cargo pants to choose from, all of which you could dress up with a strappy sandal, mule or Mara’s favorite Everlane Editor slingbacks. Or just run around in cool sneakers, slides, maybe a more utility Birkenstock or Tevas (I know, Tevas! But they were all over the runway!)
Here’s some of my favorites. And I promise - NO CAMOUFLAGE cargos, just cool cargos.
Let’s start with something more straightforward - let’s say right now you’re not up for cargo drama. These J. Crew straight legs in “soft slub sateen” (?) look perfect. Veronica Beard has a pair of Field Cargos that are also slim fitting, with a sophisticated tailored cut. They have elastic cuffs and darts that shape the seamed knees.
Another slim fit cargo are the Nili Lotan military style cotton twill crop pants in sage. They have a cool, relaxed vibe and are trimmed at the sides with a yellow and black striped grosgrain. Her Luna style has more of a harem pant feel. As I’ve mentioned about this Israeli designer, once you find the style that suits you best (styles are named Paris, Tel Aviv, East Hampton, Montauk, etc.) her pants become like a uniform. You’ll want that style in every color.
I am CRAZY about these 3x1 stretch-cotton tapered chinos - olive stretch-cotton twill, high waist and tapered legs - with large camp front pockets.
How about something a little dressier? Did you have those Joie silky cropped cargos? Don’t you wish you had kept them? I had them in khaki and burgundy, Mara told me she had them in green and black, Sherri had them in pink! Maybe these Johnny Was cropped pants are similar? Or these drawstring Ramy Brooks?
Ok, now let’s go off the grid a bit. These are perfectly my style - these Divine Heritage high waist cargo pants made from a slinky weave and slightly cropped. I dream of wearing these with dressy sandals, but probably will end up wearing with my Golden Goose sneakers which are coming up pretty good in the cost-per-wear calculation. Yes, they were expensive (even at a Century 21 discounted price) but I’ve worn them a LOT!
As we know, Mara’s into a wider leg these days - like these Amo army pants - lightweight canvas with wide cuffs and a little distressed (perfect!).
You can top cargos with a J. Crew slim perfect t-shirt in black or white, a new favorite, the sleeves are just a bit longer and it fits nicely (note - I usually wear a medium and the small is perfect). Or dress your cargos up with this silky fitted shirt from Theory, or a silk georgette from Nordstrom Rack.
If you’re up for a genuine cargo treasure hunt - in NYC an amazing shop to explore is the Front General Store in Dumbo - like a super upscale Army Navy. They also have one of the finest collections of vintage Levi 501’s and 505’s anywhere.
