Favorite Cult Status Designers
What does it take to achieve cult status as a clothing designer? For me - for starters, you must be a woman. Your clothes have to have that “cool girl vibe” but still be approachable and somewhat affordable. My first experience with a “cool girl designer’” was with agnès b. I had to have her snap sweatshirt cardigan, every girl who knew anything about fashion when I was 24 and living in NYC owned one. On my very first trip to Paris, barely had the wheels of the plane touched the runway and I was running to her store on the Rue du Jour.
In my mind, there have only been five designers that have had this brush with brilliance, and no, Instagram really has had no effect on whether these five amazingly talented women achieved success or not. These clothes bring us joy. These designers aren’t selling a brand, they are selling a vibe.
So who are my five? Agnès b, Jayne Mayle, Daryl K, Isabel Marant and the newest member of this very elite club Rachel Comey. Why do we love them? Because they get us, they make us feel cool, they make us feel “in the know”, they make us feel special. And the clothes are timeless, not trendy. They transcend age and decades. My Daryl K pieces are some of my most prized possessions and I still have 2 tunics from the launch of Isabel Marant’s Etoile collection in 2000.
Pam and I recently visited the Rachel Comey store in Soho and you can’t help but feel like a cool girl the moment you enter. The scent (hello Jane Mayle), the accessories, the wide leg jeans and of course the gold linked earrings. There is nothing in this store you don’t need and everything you want.
The Shoes: Rachel has brought back the clog and I am all over this trend. I grew up in clogs so I am happy to wear them over and over.
Signing off, I just realized I need some agnès b back in my life!
